The NPL Division One West is the most equal league I can remember. With a third of the season gone, there are only 16 points between top and bottom. There are 10 points between Workington in second and Ramsbottom in 19th (next to bottom). Three points separate Clitheroe in 5th and Hanley Town in 14th. If GNE had not won today we would be 14th not 10th. Six teams from 7th to 12th are on 18 points - including GNE! That is three points off second!
1874 Northwich were 5th at start of play and won away at Macclesfield last time out. GNE arrived on the back of good performances against Macclesfield and Linnets but gaining only one point - and the awful showing against Colne in midweek.I think everyone can agree that it was the worst performance of the season. However to put it in context, Colne today reached the second round proper of the FA Trophy. Their previous victims were Bridlington Town, Consett and Hyde United (away 3-2). Today they walloped Step Three Warrington Rylands 5-0.
Poor on Tuesday, GNE were magnificent today. After a cagey start, Louis White (14) scored from an inswinging corner. Keaton Mulvey(26)followed with a precise finish into the corner from the edge of the box and threatened all afternooon. A deserved half time 2-0 lead. The second half was all GNE playing excellent passing football and dealing with anything 1874 could do - in truth only dead ball kicks offered them any hope. The amazing thing was that GNE did not add to the lead - could have been 6-0. All 11 played well. The solidity at the back was restored with captain Lee Wilshaw and Ekow Coker(after suspension) back. Matty Gillam as makeshift left back was superb. Joe Rothwell had a much better game at right back. Jacques Etia up front ran ceaselessly. The midfield won the ball back all afternoon and prompted constant attacks.
Good news for all GNE supporters!
