We traveled to Market Drayton in October. (Stayed 2 nights - great town with lots of good pubs including Joules Brewery Tap). The game was a very boring 0-0. It turned out to be the first game in GNE's 10 game unbeaten run. If that Market Drayton side had turned up today, Glossop would have scored a shedful. However, a new manager and 10 new players meant that we were facing a different team. Most of the new players seem to have come from teams doing well at Step 5 - and young players too.
GNE dominated the first half and the pressure was all one way - towards the Trenches. The opening goal was brilliantly created by Keaton Mulvey on the left touchline and smartly finished by Jamie R. 1-0 at half time did not reflect GNE's dominance. Debutant Hugo Rodrigeuz was involved in every attack.
The second half began well for GNE. Continued pressure put Rodriguez in and he was brought down to give the Blues a penalty. Jamie R made no mistake. Within minutes a good move on the left was finished smartly by Keaton Mulvey. Game over? Shades of Colne! A couple of substitutions changed the picture for MD - number 14, Roger Bosio, took control of midfield and MD were pressing hard. A series of corners eventually brought results as Harry Allen's punch allowed Ceesay to shoot and it seemed to be deflected over Allen into the net. Five minutes later another corner saw the referee award a penalty - for handball against Rodriguez, who was booked. 3-2.
Slowly GNE regained control and even had chances for a fourth goal. Jordan Scott had come on for his debut (signed from Kendal) and helped to restore midfield control. Market Drayton did not get close to another goal and GNE had the three points.
Market Drayton will trouble other teams. Whether that will be enough to save them looks a long shot. It just shows that in football at this level, you cannot rely on league rankings!
