GNE without question deserved something out of this game. They matched Leek for most of the game and it was a committed performance from the whole team. Unfortunately, issues with the officials dominated.
Early in the game, GNE fans behind the goal at the Clubhouse end were convinced that a scrambled shot had crossed the line and had been pulled back by the Leek keeper. We spoke to several people with clear views who were adamant it was a goal. The linesman seemed to have as good a view as the witnesses.
Glossop took the lead with a superb free kick from Sam Harding. A very bad tackle on a Glossop player resulted in the free kick but astonishingly, the referee issued no card - it was a yellow, borderline red. Leek equalised but Glossop continued to go forward. The officials also missed Shakeel Jones-Griffiths being bundled over off the ball.
The first half saw no booking, no substitutes, no physios on the pitch, no holdups at all. George Bryson said that the referee indicated one minute of added time - even that was too much. In the event he played four minutes added time although nothing had happened to warrant this. Leek scored from a breakaway in the third of those minutes when the players should have been tucking into the half time oranges. So in a game where we might have been 2-0 up, we found ourselves 1-2 down. Well done referee.
Glossop battled hard in the second half and restricted Leek well. In the final minutes, a shot was cleared off the Leek line and a cross from the left went straight across the front of the goal but no one could get a touch.
This is a young team and we should be proud of their efforts for the shirt.
